Just a couple months since a local hospital shut down, already green blades of grass and leafy weeds are bursting through even the tiniest cracks in the asphalt. They are an army of greenery determined to conquer the parking lot and return it to its pristine state of grass and wildflowers.
Grass growing in cracks in a parking lot. How? Why? It testifies to the immense power of life itself. When God filled the earth with plants of every kind and animals of every kind, God infused them with a life force and determination to follow God’s command.
Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth. Genesis 1: 11
God created birds and animals and sea creatures and every creature that moves. God blessed them and saying, ‘be fruitful and multiply.’ Genesis 1:22.
Everywhere we look, no matter the environment or situation, life prevails. God built into life a willpower and determination to survive and thrive. Even under the harshest conditions, life finds a way to endure. This has profound implications in how we steward our lives.
We see this in human experience, too. No matter what the problems or obstacles, we adapt using our creativity, our brainpower and our resourcefulness. As people of faith, we have another resource: The Holy Spirit. We can call on God to help us to not only use what gifts we have, but also to guide us, help open doors and bring us to people and resources that can assist us in prevailing.
As Paul says in Romans 8:28, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”
With God’s help, when we face personal difficulties, we are like the grass in the parking lot of the former hospital – tenacious, determined, courageous, resourceful and able to find places where our life can grow and thrive. It’s park of our divine life-force.
