“What’s God been doing in your life?” I ask this question to lots of people, and most of the time I get a deer-in-the-headlights look.
I think it’s because many Christians, even faithful churchgoers, aren’t accustomed to thinking that God is intimately involved in the day-to-day workings of their lives. And it’s not their fault. Truly.
In his book, Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe,” Stephen Freeman blames our secular culture for relegating God to the “second floor” of our world. Freeman explains this upstairs/downstairs view:
We live here on earth, the first floor, where things are simply things and everything operates according to normal, natural laws, while God lives in heaven, upstairs, and is largely removed from the story in which we live. (Kindle edition, p. 7)
The best churches work tirelessly to inspire God’s people with a deeper understanding of faith, but our culture is very pervasive. As a result, many people who believe in God imagine the Almighty as a kind of first responder who is standing by, waiting for our “9-1-1” prayers, but otherwise pretty much disconnected from our lives.
Despite the fact that Christians know intellectually that God is always around, always with us, most of us don’t live that way. As a result, we may miss the signs and wonders and “coincidences” that God puts in our lives. God is always around, always active in our lives, always giving us signals, teaching, correction, insight, help and guidance.
As we grow in discipleship, we ought to deepen in spirituality. Our faith journey should give us increasing awareness, day by day and year by year, that God in us, with us, all around us, never leaving us. God is in creation, in other people, and in the situations we encounter every day.
Would you like to deepen in this kind of insight? (I know I would!) Here’s a prayer you can say every day:
Holy God, I know that you are active in my life. I know that you love me and I am your child. Open the eyes of my heart, mind and soul, that I can become aware of your presence all around us all the time. Help me to realize what you are doing in my life.
